To satisfy building control requirements we need to remove some problem trees. Toby was so lovely to deal with. He promptly came round to look at the job, we had a quote the same day and a date scheduled for the work not long after that. Toby and his colleague (also called Toby) were super competent at removing trees, grinding the stumps, trimming remaining trees and tidying up afterwards. Very straightforward and transparent to deal and reasonably priced compared with other quotes.

Tree Felling Frequently Asked Questions in Guildford

How much does tree felling cost in Guildford?

Tree felling costs in Guildford depend on the size and species of the tree, its location and accessibility, proximity to buildings and structures, and the scope of any additional work such as stump grinding or timber processing. Smaller, straightforward removals typically start from around £150, whilst larger or more complex projects involving mature specimens in confined gardens can cost considerably more. Above All Tree Care provides free, no-obligation site visits across Guildford with clear, written quotations provided on the same day wherever possible. Call 07919 147565 or email Toby@abovealltreecare.co.uk to arrange your free assessment.

Does Guildford's position within the Surrey Hills AONB affect tree felling?

Parts of Guildford and its surrounding parishes fall within or border the Surrey Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which places a heightened emphasis on landscape character and environmental sensitivity in planning decisions. Whilst the AONB designation does not automatically restrict tree felling on private land, it does mean that Guildford Borough Council tends to take a more conservative approach to TPO consent applications in these areas, and the concentration of protected trees is notably higher than in more urban locations. Ecological surveys for protected species such as bats and dormice are also more commonly required within the AONB. Above All Tree Care is experienced in navigating these considerations across Guildford and the surrounding Surrey Hills.

Which council manages Tree Preservation Orders in Guildford?

Tree Preservation Orders in Guildford are administered by Guildford Borough Council, which maintains a public register of all TPO-designated trees across the borough. Before carrying out any tree felling or significant pruning works in Guildford, it is essential to confirm whether the tree is protected by a TPO or located within a Conservation Area, as both require prior consent or notification from the council. Guildford has a significant number of Conservation Areas reflecting its historic character, and trees within these zones are subject to the six-week prior notification requirement. Above All Tree Care will check the status of any tree as a standard part of the free site consultation.

Can tree felling be carried out on steep slopes in Guildford's hillside properties?

Guildford's distinctive topography, with properties set on and around the steep chalk and greensand hills of the North Downs and Hog's Back, means that tree felling on sloping or terraced ground is a common requirement in the area. Working on gradients introduces additional safety considerations around footing, equipment positioning, timber control, and the direction of fall, all of which require experienced professional judgement. Above All Tree Care has extensive experience managing tree removals on challenging terrain across Guildford's hillside properties and will produce a detailed site-specific risk assessment before any works begin on steeply sloping ground.

Are there specific tree diseases affecting Guildford's urban tree population?

Several significant tree diseases and pests are currently impacting Guildford's trees. Ash dieback, caused by the pathogen Hymenoscyphus fraxineus, has devastated ash populations across Surrey, producing structurally unpredictable trees that can fail without warning. Oak Processionary Moth, whose caterpillars cause defoliation and pose a public health risk, is well established across the wider Surrey area. Phytophthora root rot affects a broad range of species and is common in wetter or compacted soils. Above All Tree Care's arborists are trained to identify the signs of these and other diseases during site assessments and will recommend the most appropriate management response, from targeted treatment through to safe removal where necessary.

Can tree removal in Guildford help with Japanese knotweed or other invasive species control?

Tree removal is sometimes required as part of a broader land clearance programme in Guildford where invasive species such as Japanese knotweed, giant hogweed, or rhododendron are present alongside established trees. Above All Tree Care can carry out the tree felling element of these projects, working alongside specialist invasive species contractors where required. It is important to note that Japanese knotweed is classified as controlled waste, and any excavated soil or plant material must be disposed of by a licensed waste carrier. Above All Tree Care will identify the presence of invasive species during the site assessment and advise on the appropriate course of action and any specialist contractors that may need to be involved.

How does tree felling near Guildford Cathedral or the town centre work?

Trees near Guildford Cathedral and in the wider town centre area are likely to fall within Conservation Areas or be subject to individual TPOs, given the historic and architectural significance of these locations. Any proposed works would require careful liaison with Guildford Borough Council's planning and trees team, and applications may receive additional scrutiny given the prominence of the setting. Above All Tree Care is experienced in working sensitively in historically and architecturally significant locations, and will manage the consent process and the works themselves with the level of care these environments demand. Call 07919 147565 to discuss a project in or around Guildford town centre.

What is a BS5837 tree survey and when is one needed in Guildford?

A BS5837 tree survey is a formal arboricultural assessment carried out in accordance with British Standard 5837: Trees in Relation to Design, Demolition and Construction. It is required by Guildford Borough Council when a planning application is submitted for development works near trees, as it identifies the trees present, their condition and category, and the constraints they impose on the proposed development. The survey produces a tree constraints plan and arboricultural impact assessment that forms part of the planning application. Above All Tree Care can advise on whether a BS5837 survey is likely to be required for your Guildford project and, where needed, can direct you to suitably qualified arboricultural consultants who produce these reports.

Can tree felling in Guildford be combined with garden clearance for a house sale?

Yes, Above All Tree Care regularly assists Guildford homeowners who are preparing properties for sale and wish to improve the appearance, light levels, and usability of their gardens ahead of going to market. Removing poorly positioned or overgrown trees can significantly enhance a property's kerb appeal and make gardens feel more open and inviting to potential buyers. The team can combine tree felling with stump removal, hedge cutting, and general garden clearance as part of a single visit, leaving the property looking its best. Above All Tree Care will always check for TPO restrictions before recommending any removals and will work within the required permissions to ensure a smooth process.

Is planning permission needed to remove a tree in a Guildford Conservation Area?

Strictly speaking, planning permission is not required to fell a tree in a Guildford Conservation Area, but a Section 211 notice must be submitted to Guildford Borough Council at least six weeks before works begin on any tree with a trunk diameter exceeding 75mm at 1.5 metres above ground. This gives the council the opportunity to assess the tree and decide whether to make a TPO to protect it. Carrying out works without submitting this notice is a criminal offence. Guildford has a significant number of Conservation Areas covering much of the historic town centre and surrounding villages, and Above All Tree Care will confirm whether your tree falls within one during the free site consultation.

How does Above All Tree Care ensure trees are felled safely near Guildford's busy roads?

Working near busy roads in Guildford requires careful planning and, in some cases, formal traffic management arrangements. Above All Tree Care assesses road proximity as part of every pre-work site survey, identifying whether works can be carried out safely from within the property boundary or whether the carriageway or pavement will be affected. Where traffic management is required, the team will apply for the necessary permits from Surrey County Council or the relevant highway authority and coordinate safe working arrangements before the day of the works. All team members wear high-visibility personal protective equipment when working in proximity to roads, and the exclusion zone is clearly demarcated at all times.

Can Above All Tree Care remove trees from Guildford's new build developments?

Yes, Above All Tree Care works with developers, contractors, and individual homeowners on new build and development sites across Guildford. Tree removal as part of a development project must be carefully coordinated with the planning consent, as any arboricultural conditions attached to the planning permission must be complied with before or during construction. Trees identified for retention in the BS5837 survey must be appropriately protected throughout the build programme. Above All Tree Care can advise on the arboricultural requirements of your Guildford development project and deliver the tree removal works in a manner that is fully compliant with all planning conditions and relevant British Standards.

What should Guildford homeowners do if their tree is damaged by a neighbouring construction project?

Construction works adjacent to your property in Guildford can cause significant harm to trees through root severance, soil compaction, changes to drainage, and direct physical damage to bark and stems. If you believe a tree on your property has been damaged by a neighbouring development, you should document the damage with photographs and seek specialist arboricultural advice promptly. Above All Tree Care can assess the extent of damage to your tree and provide a written condition report, which may be valuable in any subsequent dispute or insurance claim. If the damaged tree is protected by a TPO, Guildford Borough Council's planning enforcement team should also be notified.
