To satisfy building control requirements we need to remove some problem trees. Toby was so lovely to deal with. He promptly came round to look at the job, we had a quote the same day and a date scheduled for the work not long after that. Toby and his colleague (also called Toby) were super competent at removing trees, grinding the stumps, trimming remaining trees and tidying up afterwards. Very straightforward and transparent to deal and reasonably priced compared with other quotes.

We are very pleased with the work done by Toby and his team. We had a number of hedges that needed cutting back and shaping and they did an excellent job. They were very conscientious and liaised with us throughout to make sure we were happy with the results. They also did an excellent job of clearing away all the debris with the garden and drive looking immaculate after finishing. Above All Tree Care came highly recommended and we can see why. We will definitely plan to use them in the future.

Why Invest in East Clandon Woodland Management Services?

Our East Clandon woodland management team merges ecological understanding with hands-on forestry experience to provide complete care across all woodland categories. We undertake detailed evaluations reviewing species richness, structural layers, canopy coverage, understory vegetation, and faunal presence to assess your woodland's existing status and opportunities.

We carry out planned thinning interventions that extract suppressed, declining, or malformed specimens to benefit superior trees and permit greater light access to lower vegetation layers. This selective methodology stimulates robust development in remaining stock whilst promoting varied ground layer plants that provide resources for insects, avian species, and small mammals.

Where areas need regeneration, we establish suitable conditions through measured clearance, soil treatment, and protection against herbivore damage. We harness natural succession wherever feasible, introducing supplementary planting exclusively where spontaneous regeneration falls short or where particular species additions fulfil strategic aims.

Our East Clandon specialists maintain woodland features including access routes, clearings, and water management systems that enable use whilst generating important transitional habitats abundant in nectar sources and supporting fauna. We tackle safety considerations through methodical hazard tree assessment and remediation whilst preserving ancient specimens and dead standing timber wherever circumstances permit..

East Clandon Woodland Management FAQs

What size woodland do you manage in East Clandon?

Above All Tree Care manages woodlands of all sizes across East Clandon, from small copses on private residential estates through to larger agricultural and community woodlands. Whether you have a modest stand of trees requiring periodic maintenance or an extensive mixed woodland needing a comprehensive long-term management plan, our team has the experience and resources to deliver appropriate, sustainable care.

Do I need permission to carry out woodland management work in East Clandon?

Many woodland management operations require consent before work commences, including felling licences issued by the Forestry Commission for the removal of trees above a certain size. If your East Clandon woodland falls within a conservation area or contains trees protected by a Tree Preservation Order, additional permissions will be necessary. Above All Tree Care can advise you on the relevant regulatory requirements and help you navigate the approvals process before any work begins.

How often does woodland in East Clandon require active management?

The frequency of active management depends on the woodland type, its objectives, and the species present. Most woodlands benefit from intervention on a cyclical basis, with coppice rotations typically running between five and twenty-five years depending on the species involved. Thinning programmes are generally carried out every five to ten years to maintain canopy structure and light levels. Above All Tree Care will develop a tailored management schedule for your East Clandon woodland that reflects its specific ecological conditions and your long-term goals.

Can woodland management help with tree safety issues in East Clandon?

Yes, tree safety assessment and hazard management form an integral part of our East Clandon woodland management service. Our team carries out methodical surveys to identify trees with structural defects, disease, or decay that may present a risk to people, property, or neighbouring trees. Where remediation is required, we can carry out targeted pruning, bracing or removal whilst preserving ancient specimens and standing deadwood wherever it is safe to do so.

What is coppicing and is it suitable for my East Clandon woodland?

Coppicing is a traditional woodland management technique that involves cutting deciduous trees back to near ground level on a regular cycle, stimulating vigorous multi-stemmed regrowth from the base. It is particularly effective for species such as hazel, sweet chestnut, ash and hornbeam, and produces a range of useful timber products whilst significantly enhancing biodiversity by allowing light to reach the woodland floor. Above All Tree Care can assess whether coppicing is ecologically and practically appropriate for your East Clandon woodland and incorporate it into a structured management plan.

How does woodland management improve biodiversity in East Clandon?

Well-managed woodland supports a far greater diversity of species than neglected or overly dense woodland. By introducing structural variety through selective thinning, coppicing, ride maintenance and the creation of open glades, we generate the range of habitats that different species require at different life stages. In East Clandon, this can support populations of woodland birds, invertebrates, bats, small mammals and a rich ground flora including bluebells, primroses and other native wildflowers that struggle to establish in heavily shaded conditions.

Can you help access woodland grants and funding in East Clandon?

Yes, there are several grant and funding streams available to woodland owners in Surrey and the wider South East, including the England Woodland Creation Offer and various countryside stewardship options administered through Natural England. Above All Tree Care can advise East Clandon landowners on the schemes most relevant to their woodland and management objectives, and assist with the preparation of management plans that meet the requirements of funding applications.

What happens to timber and wood from management operations in East Clandon?

Timber and arisings produced during woodland management operations can be handled in several ways depending on your preferences and the material involved. Quality timber may be suitable for milling, while smaller diameter material can be processed into firewood, wood chip, or used on site as habitat piles to benefit invertebrates and fungi. Above All Tree Care will discuss the most appropriate and economically beneficial options for your East Clandon woodland as part of the planning process.

How do you protect wildlife during woodland work in East Clandon?

Wildlife protection is built into every stage of our East Clandon woodland management operations. We schedule work to avoid the bird nesting season wherever possible, carry out bat roost assessments prior to any felling work, and retain standing deadwood and veteran trees that provide irreplaceable habitat for specialist species. Our team is experienced in identifying legally protected species and will pause or adapt operations if evidence of protected wildlife is encountered during work.

Can woodland management improve access for recreation in East Clandon?

Yes, improving access for leisure and recreation is a goal we frequently incorporate into management plans for East Clandon woodlands. We can design and implement a network of rides, footpaths, and open glades that make your woodland more enjoyable and navigable whilst ensuring that the ecological integrity of the site is maintained. Thoughtful access design also creates valuable transitional habitats along woodland edges that are particularly rich in wildlife.

What is the difference between forestry and woodland management in East Clandon?

Forestry typically refers to commercial timber production at scale, often involving large monoculture plantations managed primarily for economic yield. Woodland management, by contrast, takes a more holistic approach that balances timber production with ecological health, biodiversity, landscape character, and public enjoyment. At Above All Tree Care, our East Clandon woodland management service prioritises sustainable stewardship that serves both the landowner and the natural environment over the long term.

How do you deal with invasive species in East Clandon woodlands?

Invasive non-native species such as rhododendron, cherry laurel, and Japanese knotweed can severely suppress native woodland flora and disrupt ecological processes if left unmanaged. Above All Tree Care uses a combination of mechanical removal, targeted herbicide treatment, and follow-up monitoring to control invasive species in East Clandon woodlands. Early intervention is always more effective and cost-efficient, so we recommend addressing invasive species as a priority within any new management programme.

Can you create new woodland on agricultural land in East Clandon?

Yes, Above All Tree Care can assist East Clandon landowners in establishing new woodland on suitable agricultural or amenity land. This involves site assessment, species selection appropriate to local soils and conditions, ground preparation, planting, and the installation of deer and rabbit protection where required. New woodland creation can also attract grant funding through schemes such as the England Woodland Creation Offer, and we can advise on eligibility and application as part of the planning process.

What qualifications and insurance do your East Clandon woodland management team hold?

Above All Tree Care is fully insured, and our woodland management team brings over twelve years of specialist expertise to every project across East Clandon and the surrounding areas of Surrey and South West London. Our operatives hold appropriate industry qualifications for chainsaw operation, aerial tree work, and land management. You can contact us on 07919 147565 or at Toby@abovealltreecare.co.uk to discuss your woodland requirements and arrange an initial site visit.
