How our tree stump removal service works

When a tree falls, or you’ve used our tree felling services, in most cases we advise complete tree stump removal.

Our expert team will suggest this due to the possibility of fungal root rotting, alongside suckering. Completely dead stumps won’t form suckers, but they can play host to root diseases such as honey fungus, so aren’t worth leaving in the ground and taking the risk. Tree stump removal also reduces any trip hazards in your garden or around your property. However, felling and tree stump removal can be requested for several other reasons aside from safety, such as aesthetics or maybe to clear up garden space. There are multiple techniques to tree stump removal that can be utilised, and due to our expertise, we can operate them all to the highest level of quality.

How our tree stump removal service works

Above all, we will always survey the surrounding area safely, to determine to what extent the removal will be safe. A large priority is making sure we keep all underground utilities untouched. When we’ve determined that the area for tree stump removal is safe, we use our high powered machinery to remove both the above and underground components of a tree stump.

Mini-excavator

We can usually remove the majority of the root system by using a mini-excavator (operated by one of our skilled arborists). Initially, when trees are cut down during our tree felling service, our expert team will be sure to leave a significant length of trunk remaining. This gives leverage to aid tree stump removal with a mini-excavator.

Stump Grinders

Another effective machine we use in tree stump removal is a high powered stump grinder. A stump grinder will mechanically grind out the main root plate, leaving a fine sawdust behind. Although stump grinders can be hired, they are extremely hazardous and should only be used by trained operatives. Our team is fully trained and qualified to handle a stump grinder.

After the tree stump removal process

Whilst our specialist machinery is designed to cause as little disruption to the surrounding landscape as possible, as tree stump removal can affect future garden plans. We will always discuss how deep you would like the stump ground. Shallow grinding is normally sufficient for laying turf, but we always allow for deeper, where possible for replanting or landscaping.   We also consider the sawdust and any remaining waste after a tree stump removal. Many of our clients like to use it to fill in the hole, but it can also be used as mulch in other areas of the garden, or we are happy to take it away and find a sustainable solution for it. Meanwhile, feel rest assured that our team will make sure to completely remove any diseased wood. Our team will also make sure to discuss your preferences before any tree stump removal begins. Should you wish to replant the area it is best we remove the bulk of the sawdust and fill the hole with topsoil.
